Instagram Stories use a 9:16 aspect ratio at 1080x1920 pixels, filling the entire smartphone screen. This full-bleed vertical format is unique because it has no surrounding UI chrome — your image becomes the entire experience. Instagram recommends this exact resolution for maximum clarity, and uploading at lower resolutions triggers automatic upscaling that introduces noticeable blur. Stories support both JPEG and PNG formats, but file sizes above 30MB may cause upload failures on slower connections.

The story canvas has critical safe zones that designers must respect. The top 250 pixels are partially covered by the username, profile picture, and timestamp. The bottom 280 pixels overlap with the reply bar, swipe-up link (or link sticker), and navigation dots. This leaves an effective content area of roughly 1080x1390 pixels in the center. Instagram also reserves approximately 96 pixels on each side for edge-swipe navigation gestures, making the truly safe zone about 888x1390 pixels.

Stories are displayed for exactly 5 seconds for static images (up to 15 seconds for video), which means your design must communicate its message almost instantly. High-contrast text with solid or semi-transparent backgrounds performs significantly better than text placed directly over busy imagery. The platform's built-in text tool renders at specific sizes, but custom text in your image should be no smaller than 36px at 1080px width to remain readable across all device sizes including older iPhones with smaller screens.

One overlooked aspect is how Instagram compresses story images differently than feed posts. Stories use more aggressive compression because they are ephemeral content with a 24-hour lifespan. Images with subtle gradients often show visible banding artifacts. To mitigate this, add a slight noise texture (0.5-1% grain) over gradient areas. Also avoid pure black (#000000) backgrounds as they can reveal compression artifacts more readily — use #0A0A0A or darker grays instead.
