YouTube channel banners (also called channel art) are uploaded at 2560x1440 pixels, but this full dimension is only displayed on TV screens. The visible area varies drastically by device: desktop shows approximately 2560x423 (the horizontal center strip), tablets display roughly 1855x423, and mobile shows just 1546x423. This means over 70% of the vertical canvas is cropped on most devices, making the central safe zone critically important. YouTube's official safe area for text and logos is 1546x423 pixels centered within the 2560x1440 canvas.

The banner sits at the very top of your channel page and is the first thing visitors see. On desktop, channel links and social media icons overlay the bottom-right corner of the visible strip. On mobile, the subscribe button and channel name appear below the banner rather than overlapping it. The banner's file size limit is 6MB, and YouTube accepts JPEG, PNG, BMP, and GIF formats (non-animated). For the best quality, upload as PNG at the full 2560x1440 resolution — YouTube handles the cropping rather than you losing control of it.

The extreme cropping behavior makes designing YouTube banners uniquely challenging. A banner that looks stunning on a TV at full 2560x1440 might show only a thin horizontal strip of background gradient on mobile. The safe strategy is to design your primary content within the 1546x423 center zone and treat the surrounding area as expandable background. Place your channel name, tagline, and upload schedule within this safe zone. Background imagery can extend to the full canvas to look polished on TVs and desktop monitors.

Designers frequently create beautiful banners at 2560x1440 only to discover that their carefully positioned text and logos are cropped on every device except TVs. Always use YouTube's official safe area template overlay when designing. Another common mistake is using small text — the banner renders at approximately 1080 pixels wide on most desktop screens, which means text designed at the 2560px canvas width is displayed at roughly 42% size. Minimum font size should be 48pt at the design resolution for reliable readability across devices.
